Broadband Light

What is Broadband Light Treatment

Broadband Light (BBL) treatment is one of our favourites because of its many benefits in the short term and long term. It is an effective means to revitalise the complexion after prolonged sun exposure, treat redness, unwanted vessels, pigmentation, or improve depleted collagen levels. BBL harmonises the skin, alleviating age spots and redness, enhancing skin texture, and minimising the appearance of pores. This comprehensive light therapy encourages a smoother, more refined visage, enabling you to redefine your complexion.

OVERVIEW

Broadband Light therapy emits a broad spectrum of light wavelengths to target specific colours within the skin, including melanin, pigmentation, other brown spots, dark hair, and the haemoglobin in red blood cells. The emitted light generates heat, which is absorbed by the problem areas.

The non-invasive treatment is known for its ability to stimulate collagen production, improving skin texture, tone, and firmness. BBL can also regulate sebaceous gland activity, reducing oil production and minimising acne breakouts.

Consult with our qualified team to determine if BBL therapy is the right option for you.

What to Expect

The procedure is generally well-tolerated, with minimal discomfort and downtime. Multiple treatment sessions may be recommended for optimal results, depending on the specific concerns being addressed.

How to Prepare for Treatment
To ensure optimal results it is important that you minimise sun exposure for at least 4 weeks prior treatment. Refrain from using fake tan products for 2 weeks. Consult Dr. Holmes if you have melasma for personalised pre-treatment planning. Consider an antiviral prescription if you are prone to cold sores to prevent activation during or after the session.

Always mention any new topical skin care products you may have started since your last visit. If hair removal is involved, you can’t have removed the hairs with plucking, tweezing or waxing for 3 weeks prior. You can trim hairs though – as long as there is hair under the skin in the hair follicle.

Adhering to these preparation needs maximises safety and efficacy of the therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Broadband Light Hurt?

Pain tolerance varies greatly among individuals. Approximately half of our patients opt for numbing cream, especially for corrective treatments targeting brown spots and redness. However, those undergoing maintenance BBL sessions may choose not to use numbing cream.

How many treatments are needed?

Initially this will depend on the individual and the condition being managed. However, everyone can benefit from an initial corrective series of 3-visits a month apart. Everyone’s skin and concerns are different, so a personalised plan will be created to suit your needs. After corrective sessions, the recommended maintenance will be 2-4 times a year for best results.

What can I expect after Broadband Light?

It is normal to experience some redness, burning sensation, or even a little swelling after corrective sessions. The more target colour present in the skin, the more heat is retained. You may be a bit patchy as more sun damaged or coloured areas absorb more of the heat. Hair follicles can be red and swollen for up to 2 days. Pigmentation and brown spots will go darker – particularly on your first ever session. Over a period of 7-14 days pigmentation will settle and your clearer, healthier skin will be revealed. Other areas of the body can take up to a month to settle and clear.

We usually advise use of a plain gentle moisturiser, cleanser and sunscreen for several days, avoiding active topicals using acids, VitA and VitC. Makeup is okay to use. Once you have moved on to maintenance Forever Young BBL sessions there is no downtime, just more radiant skin with long term improvement in sagginess, lines, and skin tone.

Are there any side effects with Broadband Light?

It is a powerful light therapy, but with the expertise of Dr Holmes you are in safe and highly educated hands. She personally trains her team to provide consistence and excellence in their treatments – implementing The Mayah Clinic approach to the use of this fabulous technology. Hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation are rare. Performed properly it is a safe effective skin treatment.

Can anyone have Broadband Light?

Treatment parameters will be altered depending on your skin type. Very dark skin types can have some wavelengths of light used, but not all. You will complete a skin typing questionnaire at your appointment, and your clinician will assess your skin to determine the effectiveness of this treatment for you.
