Let’s talk about Mould with Dr Holmes

First it was Covid mask acne, now its mould rashes!

If you think you haven’t got mould in your house recently, and you live in eastern NSW you are probably just not looking hard enough. With days of higher than 90% humidity (my friend and I were comparing experiences with the condensation on the outside of fridge that we’d never seen before) and then so much rain, it’s very hard to avoid. Of course, if your house is flooded then it’s a whole other level of mould problem.

Our skin can be telling us about this problem. Mould produces allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions), irritants and sometimes toxic substances. Mould isn’t always black – sometimes it is a light colour, or pinkish. These substances can get into the air, and land on our skin and be breathed in. Then we end up with irritated eyes, runny noses, coughs, and skin rashes.

So just something to be aware of. Check in the back of cupboards or drawers regularly. Be alert for musty smells and try and keep everything well ventilated. There are a variety of mould treatments depending on the severity of the problem – even as simple as old white vinegar and scrubbing.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ so keep it healthy!
