Hair Loss

Understanding the Cause, and your Treatment Options

Hair loss is a common concern for both men and women and can be deeply distressing because it often affects far more than appearance. Hair is closely tied to identity, confidence, and how we feel in our own skin. When it begins to thin or shed, many people experience a loss of control, heightened self-consciousness, and a sense that something isn’t quite right within their body.

Unfortunately, hair loss is frequently overlooked in general medical care, often dismissed as cosmetic rather than recognised as a meaningful clinical concern. This can leave patients without clear answers or effective treatment, despite the significant impact it can have on wellbeing and quality of life.

At The Mayah Clinic, we approach hair loss with a medical lens—seeking to understand the underlying cause, provide targeted treatments and maintain overall health to support sustainable, long-term hair outcomes.

The Normal Hair Cycle

Each hair follicle cycles independently through three key phases:

  • Anagen (growth phase): Lasts 2 to 7 years. This is when the hair is actively growing.
  • Catagen (transition phase): A short phase (2 to 3 weeks) where growth stops and the follicle shrinks.
  • Telogen (resting/shedding phase): Lasts around 3 months. The hair eventually sheds to make way for new growth.

At any given time, around 85–90% of your hair is in the anagen phase. Disruptions to this cycle – particularly a shortened growth phase or premature shedding – can lead to noticeable thinning.

What Influences Hair Growth?

Hair growth is influenced by a complex interplay of factors:

  • Hormones: Androgens, oestrogen, thyroid hormones
  • Nutritional status: Iron, zinc, protein, vitamin D and B12
  • Stress and systemic illness
  • Genetics
  • Inflammation and scalp health
  • Ageing and metabolic health

Often, more than one factor is contributing.

Types of Hair Loss

Understanding the type of hair loss is key to effective treatment:

  • Androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss): Gradual thinning over the crown or widening of the part. This is genetically driven and hormonally influenced.
  • Telogen effluvium: Diffuse shedding often triggered by stress, illness, postpartum changes, or nutritional deficiency.
  • Alopecia areata: Autoimmune condition causing patchy hair loss.
  • Traction alopecia: Due to chronic tension from hairstyles.
  • Scarring alopecia: Less common; involves permanent follicle damage and requires early intervention.

What Happens during a Hair Consultation?

A hair consultation at The Mayah Clinic is thorough and personalised. It typically includes:

  • A detailed medical history, including hormonal, nutritional, and lifestyle factors
  • Discussion of symptom onset, pattern, and progression
  • Scalp and hair examination
  • Consideration of relevant blood tests
  • Identification of the underlying type (or combination) of hair loss
  • A tailored treatment plan aligned with your goals

This is not a one-size-fits-all approach—hair loss is multifactorial, and so is its management.

Treatment Options

Mononuclear-Cell-Rich Platelet-Rich Plasma (MR-PRP)

PRP is a treatment that involves using your own blood, which is processed to concentrate your platelets. Platelets contain growth factors and bioactive substances that can stimulate tissue repair and regeneration. This concentrated serum is then injected into the scalp in the target regions in order to improve scalp circulation, cellular repair, and activation of dormant hair follicles for stronger, healthier hair growth.

Not all PRP is the same. Standard preparations can vary significantly in concentration and cellular composition. At The Mayah Clinic, we use a next-generation PRP preparation that is both highly concentrated and enriched with mononuclear cells. These cells play an important role in signalling, inflammation modulation, and tissue repair, allowing for a more sustained and effective regenerative response within the scalp and hair follicles.

Calecim Advanced Hair System

Calecim uses a proprietary stem cell derived formula PTT-6. This contains over 3000 proteins, growth factors and exosomes which act to stimulate hair follicles, reduce scalp inflammation and promote the development of thicker, healthier hair.

Calecim Advances Hair System is often used alongside PRP for a synergistic effect. Calecim can be delivered under expert guidance at The Mayah Clinic via a series of microneedling treatments. Alternatively, it can be conveniently performed at home.

Lifestyle & Foundational Support

Optimising the internal environment is critical for sustainable results:

  • Correction of iron or nutrient deficiencies
  • Hormonal balance where appropriate
  • Stress management and sleep optimisation
  • Scalp care and hair protection practices

These areas will be addressed and monitored by our experienced doctors.

A Considered Approach

Hair restoration takes time. Early shedding can occur with effective treatments as weaker hairs are replaced by stronger growth, allowing for long term results. With the right diagnosis and a consistent, tailored approach, meaningful improvement is achievable.

At The Mayah Clinic, the focus is not just on hair—but on restoring confidence, vitality, and overall wellbeing.
